CDL Permit

Before you can obtain a CDL: You must,

  • Study the NY State Commercial Driver’s Manual to take the written permit tests.
  • Study the sections of the manual that apply to the type of CDL you need.
  • Apply for a commercial learner permit at any DMV office.
  • Pay the applicable fees for the tests.
  • Pass the written tests for the CDL class that you need.
  • You must meet the Federal medical examination requirements (see Medical Certification Requirements ).

Once you have a learner permit: You must,

  • Obtain sufficient supervised driving practice.
  • Pay the skill test fee of ($40) before you can schedule a road test.
  • Schedule your road test appointment once you’ve had enough training.

Once you pass your CDL road test: You will,

  • Be issued a receipt indicating you must wait 1 business day before visiting a DMV office in order to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License document.
  • Pay the CDL fee which depends on the expiration date and the class of your current driver license, and the date that you receive your CDL.
